Sapporo–Hakodate Trains Are Disrupted: What Travelers Should Do

What changed

Heavy rain damaged more than ten locations on the Muroran Main Line, including areas affected by soil and track-bed damage. The Limited Express Hokuto—the normal direct train between Sapporo and Hakodate—remains suspended.

JR Hokkaido is using a limited combination of substitute buses and temporary rail services on parts of the route. This is not a like-for-like replacement for the normal timetable, and seats or workable connections may be limited.

What this means for your itinerary

If Sapporo and Hakodate are both essential, compare a domestic flight with the available highway buses before committing to the substitute rail-bus arrangement. Leave a large buffer before any flight, ferry, or onward Shinkansen reservation.

If the journey is optional, moving Hakodate to a later date is the lower-risk choice. A route that technically operates can still be a poor travel day when transfers are limited and many other passengers are trying to make the same move.

What to check before leaving

  1. Open JR Hokkaido’s live operation page on the morning of travel.
  2. Confirm every segment rather than searching only for “Sapporo to Hakodate.”
  3. Do not assume a normal reservation remains usable after a cancellation.
  4. Ask the original seller about changes or refunds if you already hold a ticket.
