Can You Bring a Large Suitcase on the Shinkansen?
Yes, but very large bags need planning on some routes and luggage forwarding is often easier.
Measure the bag, not just its weight
Add the suitcase’s length, width and height, including wheels and handles. On the Tokaido–Sanyo–Kyushu Shinkansen corridor, the result determines what you need to do.

The reservation does not add a special baggage surcharge when booked correctly. If you board a covered train with oversized baggage and no reservation, the operator can charge ¥1,000 and direct where the bag must be stored.
These specific reservation rules apply to the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, not every train in Japan. Check the operator if your route is elsewhere.
Where luggage goes
Carry-on and medium bags can go on the overhead rack or, if genuinely small enough, at your feet. A heavy suitcase may technically be under 160 cm but still be difficult to lift safely. In that case, reserving an appropriate baggage space or forwarding it can be the better decision.
Some last-row seats have an oversized baggage area behind them. That area belongs to passengers who reserved the linked seats; it is not first-come, first-served storage. Some trains also offer baggage compartments tied to specific seat reservations.
When booking online or at a ticket machine, select the option explicitly labeled for an oversized baggage area or compartment. At a staffed counter, say that you are traveling with oversized baggage.
What does not count the same way
Strollers, musical instruments and sports equipment are treated differently from ordinary oversized suitcases. They can often be brought without the oversized-baggage reservation, but you still need a linked reservation if you want to use the reserved oversized area. Large or unusual items should be checked with the operator before travel.
The easier alternative
Japan’s luggage delivery services can send a suitcase between many hotels, stations and airports. Sending the large case ahead and carrying one overnight bag is often more comfortable than moving it through large stations.
Do not assume same-day arrival everywhere. Ask the sending hotel or counter for the delivery date before handing over the bag, keep medication and documents with you, and allow an extra day for remote destinations.
Before you leave the hotel
- Measure all three sides of the packed suitcase.
- Confirm which Shinkansen operator runs the route.
- Reserve the correct seat or baggage space if the total exceeds 160 cm on a covered line.
- Keep valuables, medicine and one change of clothes in a smaller bag.
- Use forwarding when the bag is technically allowed but still awkward to handle.
